I love designing in Siemens NX, but keeping these files on my hard drive doesn't help anyone. I decided to put them out here for anyone who needs to practice material. Whether you're a student or just love CAD like I do, feel free to use these blueprints to sharpen your skills.

CAD Modelling Challenge #9 — Engineering Drawing Breakdown
NX Modelling Challenge #9 | NXDATUM 04DTM23
This week's challenge is a heavy-duty structural corner bracket with side gussets. Unlike organic or swept shapes, this component is all about rigid, uniform-thickness geometry and symmetrical feature placement. It serves as a perfect exercise in reading multi-view orthographic projections and maintaining consistent wall dimensions.
Top & Front Views — The Main Footprint and Hole Placement
The top view establishes the overall footprint of the bracket: a perfect square of 127mm width and 127mm depth. You can clearly see the two side walls (gussets) which are uniformly 12.7mm thick. The base plate features two mounting holes. These are positioned exactly 101.6mm from the rear face.
Moving to the front view, we see the back mounting plate. Like the rest of the model, it maintains a symmetrical design. It features two additional holes located 88.9mm up from the bottom edge. Both pairs of holes (on the base and the back plate) are spaced 50.8mm apart (25.4mm on each side of the vertical centerline).
Section A-A — Profile and Thickness
The section view (labeled A-A in the top view) acts as our side profile. It clearly demonstrates that all structural walls — the back plate, the bottom base plate, and the triangular side gussets — share a uniform thickness of 12.7mm (which translates to exactly half an inch). It also confirms that all four mounting holes are through-holes with a diameter of Ø12.7mm.
Modelling Strategy in Siemens NX
There are a few ways to tackle this in Siemens NX, but the most robust method is to build the base structure first. Start by sketching the primary L-shape profile (the back and bottom plates, both 12.7mm thick and 127mm long) on a side datum plane. Extrude this profile symmetrically or in one direction to a total width of 127mm.
Next, sketch the triangular profile for the side gussets on the outer side faces of your L-bracket. Extrude these inwards by 12.7mm and make sure the Boolean operation is set to Unite. Finally, create a sketch on the back face and the bottom face for your hole centers using the 101.6mm, 88.9mm, and 25.4mm dimensions. Use the Hole command to punch the 4x Ø12.7mm through-holes.
What This Challenge Tests
This model tests your ability to maintain a uniform structural thickness across multiple intersecting bodies. It evaluates symmetrical sketching, efficient use of the Unite boolean operation, and precise hole positioning based on multiple coordinate references.
Complete the model in Siemens NX, run mass properties, and submit your answer on the NXDATUM validation tool.
