CAD Modelling Challenge #1 — The Ultimate Engineering Breakdown NX Modelling Challenge #1 | NXDATUM 04DTM23 Welcome to the final boss! Challenge #1 is a highly complex multi-axis industrial bearing housing with integrated mounting lugs. This model is designed to test every skill you've learned so far: from interpreting dense isometric dimensioning to managing complex angular faces (30° and 76°) and precisely locating multi-diameter holes across non-planar surfaces. The Central Hub And Main Body The core of this part is a large cylindrical hub with an outer diameter of Ø41 and an inner bore of Ø28. The hub has a total width of 38mm. Positioning this hub is the most critical step; its center is located 44mm vertically from the base and 51mm horizontally from the rear face. Notice the small 3mm offset at the base of the hub cylinder—precision here is vital for the overall mass calculation. The Base and Angled Lugs The overall length of the base assembly is 121mm. It features several complex mounting sections: The Front Sloped Face: A 30° angle cut that transitions from the main body down to the lower mounting platform. Side Mounting Pad: A 16mm thick pad featuring 2-Ø6 holes, positioned 26mm from the central axis. The Rear 76° Bracket: A specific mounting lug extending from the back at a 76° angle, with a 13mm thickness and a 20mm width. Managing these angles requires expert use of Datum Planes and Project Curve features in Siemens NX. Top and Side Features This model is packed with secondary features that are easy to miss: Top Counterbore: A Ø25 counterbore (2mm deep) with a Ø12 through-hole, located exactly 54mm from the rear vertical edge. Oil/Lubrication Hole: A small Ø6 hole on the top of the main hub, centered at the 19mm midpoint of the cylinder's width. Rear Vertical Flange: A 48mm tall vertical section with 2-Ø6 holes spaced 22mm apart vertically, positioned exactly 13mm from the bottom edge. Modelling Strategy in Siemens NX For Challenge #1, a "Master Sketch" approach is highly recommended: Primary Profile: Start by sketching the primary side profile (including the 121mm length and the 30° slope) on the YZ plane and extrude it. Hub Creation: Next, create the main Ø41/Ø28 hub using the Cylinder or Extrude tool, ensuring it is positioned at the 44mm height. Angled Features: Use Datum Planes to tackle the 76° rear lug and the top Ø25 counterbore. For the side pads, sketch on the base plane and extrude upwards. Holes & Blends: Finally, use the Hole command for all ten holes. Don't forget the R6 transition radius between the hub and the top plate—this blend is essential for a smooth structural finish. What This Challenge Tests This is the ultimate test of Dimensional Literacy. With over 30 dimensions in a single isometric view, it evaluates your ability to filter information and build a logical feature tree. It tests your proficiency with angular offsets, hole standards, and complex boolean unions in a high-stakes modeling environment. Complete the model in Siemens NX, run mass properties, and submit your final answer on the NXDATUM validation tool to complete the series!
